Saying that women and children need protection from sexual predators inclined to strike again once they are released from prison, Assemblyman Steven Labriola, a Massapequa Park Republican, is calling for passage of a civil confinement law that would keep high-risk offenders locked up even after serving their sentences.  The bill would keep sex offenders who are most likely to re-offend and who have great difficulty controlling their behavior confined in mental institutions until they are deemed rehabilitated.  Labriola said the bill would affect a small portion of the offenders in

Albert Fentress, a 61 year old former teacher who confessed to killing a teenager and eating some of his body parts must remain in psychiatric care, a judge ruled.  He has been confined to mental hospitals since he was found innocent by reason of insanity in the August 1979 killing of 18-year-old Paul Masters.  He confessed to killing Masters after he wandered into Fentress’ backyard.  He lured him into his basement, tied him to a post, sexually abused and mutilated him and shot him twice in the head before cooking

Thomas Wilcox put his hand down the bike shorts of a 13 year old girl he knew and molested her in 1997.  He was convicted of child rape and served three years in prison spending them partly in the state treatment center for sex offenders.  He was scheduled to be released last summer but under a new Massachusetts law there was no guarantee that he would get out at all.  According to the New York Times, enacted in recent years here and in 15 other states, sexually violent predator statutes

Angela Coffel, 22, would be the first woman in Missouri committed to a mental hospital under the state’s 1998 sexual predator law.  Prosecutors call her a sexually violent predator who should be committed indefinitely because she’s a danger to society.
