Charles Bodenburg, 20, molested, beat and smothered 3 year old Kayla Zachman to death while baby-sitting her and her infant brother.  Bodenburg was the boyfriend of Kayla’s mother.  Kayla’s grandmother said she could track Kayla’s fear of Bodenburg back around Memorial Day weekend, when he started baby-sitting regularly since the mother had started working.  The mother said, She cried.  She didn’t want me to leave her with him.

Bodenburg’s initial story was that his girlfriend’s young daughter died from drinking too much amaretto.  The version of events he gave later

Donald P. Schmid, a 35 year old Bethpage man, admitted in court that he fondled his friend’s three sons ages 7, 8 and 9 when they were at his home at 9 Revere Avenue.  He pleaded guilty to sexually abusing the boys when they slept at his house in November.  He was sentence Friday to 6 months in jail and will be placed on probation for 5 years after his release.  He originally was charged with three felony counts of first degree sexual abuse for fondling each of the boys

Gary Gillard, a 38-year-old Huntington man, was convicted of four counts of first-degree sodomy,first-degree sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and third degree assault. He wassentenced to 80 years in state prison with no chance of parole. He sexually abused and sodomizedthe 9-year-old daughter of an acquaintance. Gillard committed the crimes on numerous occasionsbetween May and October 1999. His criminal record dates to 1980 and includes convictions forreckless endangerment, assault and petty larceny. The Rev. Fernando Garcia, a minister and former elementary school aide who videotaped himself molesting children pleaded guilty in Greenwood, South Carolina, to sexually abusing nearly two dozen youngsters and was sentenced to 60 years in prison.  The 42 year old man pleaded guilty to 47 counts.  He has admitted molesting the 23 victims, who are ages 5 to 13, at his church office and at the school.  There were 26 videotapes found by police in his office showing him sexually abusing children after an 8 year old boy told

A Coram man was convicted in Suffolk County Court of first degree rape, first degree sexual abuse and three counts of first degree sodomy of his daughter more than 11 years ago.  Now he may be freed soon in the wake of a federal appellate court’s decision that his defense was sabotaged by an incompetent attorney.  The man is not named because it would identify his daughter.  He was sentenced to 12 1/2 to 25 years in prison in 1989.  According to Newsday, the conviction stemmed from two alleged attacks,

Greg Whelan, 49, was sentenced to serve 6 months in the Suffolk County Correctional Facility and 5 years on probation.  The victim’s parents denounced the sentence as dangerously lenient.  Whelan pleaded guilty last month to two counts of first-degree sexual abuse and three counts of endangering the welfare of a child.  He faced a maximum sentence of 4 to 7 years in prison.  He apologized for the damage he did and promised it would never happen again.  Whelan grabbed the crotch of a young girl in a King Kullen supermarket
