Jonathan Wright’s chest heaved and he began to sob uncontrollably Thursday, June 9, while clutching a tiny white T-shirt emblazoned with the name of the MacLaren Children’s Center, a notorious and now closed foster care facility in El Monte at the center of a new lawsuit alleging decades of horrific child abuse by staff members.

Wright, 39, stood in the shadow of the Stanley Mosk Courthouse flanked by well-known civil rights attorney Ben Crump and co-counsel Adam P. Slater, and began to describe the abuse he suffered at MacLaren.

Gov. Kathy Hochul signed the Adult Survivors Act into law Tuesday.

The law opens a one-year look back window, suspending the statute of limitations for survivors who were sexually abused as an adult.

The state Assembly passed the ASA Monday, following a unanimous vote in the Senate last month.

Terry Lee Hurst Jr., 48, was arraigned in Ionia County Circuit Court last Tuesday before Judge Ronald Schafer. Hurst appeared from the Ionia County Jail, where he has been held since Feb. 18. His attorney, Jeff Perlman, appeared via Zoom.

Hurst is charged with five counts of CSC in the first degree to a victim under 13 years of age, five in the second degree, one in the third degree and one in the fourth degree.

First-degree CSC is a felony that carries a mandatory minimum of 25 years up

A Mount Pleasant man charged for sex abuse is behind bars for violating an order of protection.

Albert Orjuela, 47, was charged in 2019 for sexually abusing two 14-year-olds girls as a Girl Scout leader.

He was arrested for going to the workplace of one the girls who had been issued an order of protection.

For 25 years, the federal Violence Against Women Act has required any state that wants to be eligible for certain federal grants to certify that the state covers the cost of medical forensic exams for people who have been sexually assaulted.

Governor Doug Ducey today signed legislation to ensure victims of sex crimes are not charged for any part of the medical or forensic examination related to the crime.

BEAUMONT, Texas — A jury found a Beaumont man guilty on Thursday of three counts of sexual abuse of a child and one count of indecency with a child.

Emmanuel Perez, 37, was accused of abusing a 12-year-old victim who made an outcry about six incidents, according to a probable cause affidavit.

Perez was sentenced to 70 years concurrently in prison for each of the
