CHARGED IN TEEN’S RAPE

Kevin D. Cooks, a 21 year old Flanders man, was arrested on rape and sodomy charges March 12, 2004, stemming from an ongoing sexual relationship with a 14 year old girl.  He was already under arrest as a result of an investigation into several burglaries in the Flanders area when police became aware of allegations that he had been sexually involved with the girl.  Cooks, of 20 Hart Avenue, was released from the Suffolk County jail in Riverhead March 12 on the burglary charges, but immediately arrested again and arraigned in Southampton Town Justice Court on the new charges.  He was again held in the jail in lieu of bail.  He was put on probation until 2010, with the state Department of Criminal Justice listing him as a level one offender with a low risk of committing another sex crime.

Cooks, who is a registered sex offender, was arrested on March 9, 2005, and charged with three counts of raping a 13 year old girl, less than a year since his arrest for the other sex crime.  The victim told detectives Cooks began talking to her in mid-January at her school bus stop after she got off the bus, persuading her to give him her cell phone number.  He called her a few times and waited for her near the bus stop, eventually engaging in sexual intercourse with her three times.  He was arraigned on March 11 and ordered held without bail at the Suffolk County jail.
