IMMIGRATION OFFICIALS NAB SEX OFFENDERS, VOW TO DEPORT

Federal immigration officials said yesterday they arrested 18 sex offenders in Nassau County and said they will be placed in deportation proceedings.  The men were arrested by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents and officers from the Nassau County probation department.  They included a citizen of Guyana who is a legal permanent resident of the US and was twice convicted of raping a 15 year old girl.  Another is a native of El Salvador who was in the country illegally and was convicted of sexually abusing a 13 year old girl.  Twelve of the 18 people picked up were in the country illegally and automatically were subject to deportation.  The charges the men were convicted of or pleaded guilty to included rape, sodomy, sex abuse, sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child.  all involved teenagers or adults, and one sodomy case involved a 5 year old.
