LONG ISLAND TEACHER SENTENCED IN CHILD PORN CASE

A middle-school teacher and an unemployed woodworker pleaded not guilty in June 2009 infederal court in Central Islip in separate child pornography cases.  Richard Hartig, 42, aveteran science teacher at Island Trees Memorial Middle School, Levittown, pleaded not guilty todownloading videos of child pornography.  Hartig was held without bail pending ahearing.  Thomas Carey Jr., 31, of 11 Kendrick Lane, Dix Hills, pleaded not guilty to a chargeof videotaping himself molesting a male child and possession of child pornography.  Carey, anunemployed woodworker, was held without bail as a danger to the community, although relativesoffered to post more than $1 million in bail.
Hartig, now 45, was sentenced to 6 years in prison for trafficking in child pornography inSeptember of 2011.
