Attorney General John Ashcroft announced that Federal law enforcement authorities haverncharged 89 people, including seven New York State residents, in a nationwide crackdown on anrnInternet child pornography ring. Among the 89 members of a defunct discussion group on Yahoo!rnInc.'s Web site arrested in the undercover FBI probe over 17 months are Paul Alexander, 39, of BayrnShore, Susan Flynn, 35, and her husband, James Flynn, 36, of West Hempstead, and Shannon TimothyrnMacauley, 36, an upstate school bus driver from upstate Constable. Two Catholic priests, six otherrnclergymembers, a preschool teachers aide and at least one police officer also were arrested as partrnof the operation named Candyman after the now shuttered e-group,rn(www.egroups.com/groups/thecandyman). So far, 27 members of the e-group have admitted to molestingrn36 children. The investigation has uncovered 7,000 members of the e-group and has focused itsrnefforts on those with the greatest access to children. Twenty men in the metropolitan area werernarrested including one ex-cop. The arrest of disgraced New York City officer and former PBArndelegate Brian Mathews, 40, came four years after he was tried on administrative charges forrnordering child pornography through the mail and kicked off the force. Mathews pleaded guilty to thernkiddie-porn charges, admitting he'd perused a sexually explicit photo of a baby. He admitted tornviewing one particular image showing an infant engaged in sexually explicit conduct - under arnplea deal hammered out with Assistant US Attorney Katya Jestin.rn
Mathews has been sentenced to 19 months in a special prison for sex perverts. He has beenrnsent to a federal treatment program in South Carolina.rn
