Archbishop George Pell, of Sydney, Australia’s most senior Roman Catholic clergyman, announced Tuesday he would temporarily step aside during an investigation into allegations that he sexually abused a child more than 40 years ago. He is accused of molesting a 12 year old boy when he was training as a priest in the Archdiocese of Melbourne, the church said in a statement. The year of the alleged incident and identity of the complainant were not given.

The Rev. John Blackenship, a 65 year old Roman Catholic priest, was indicted Tuesday on four counts of sexually abusing a 14 year old boy two decades ago. Blackenship allegedly abused the boy while he was pastor of Sacred Heart Church in Prince George County. The alleged victim, who police said has requested that his identity not be released, had helped with chores around the church. The reason he came forth is because he thought this priest had been maneuvering his way back to working with children, said police Lt.

Jennifer Reiffert, a 24 year old camp counselor at a summer day camp in East Setauket, wasarrested yesterday and charged with sexually abusing a 3 year old girl on one of the camp’s buses.The incident allegedly occurred on July 22 just after 9:30 a.m. when Reiffert, who lives at 373Lake Pointe Drive in Middle Island, picked up the girl from her family’s home to drive her to theLaurel Hill School. Gabriel Massaro, a 62 year old popular Capuchin Friar who spent the past two decades preaching at retreats in local parishes, can no longer function publicly as a priest because of allegations that he molested several boys, including one from Long Island and another from Queens. However, he will remain a priest because he is a member of a religious order, an offshoot of the Franciscans. Order priests, whose superiors report directly to Rome, do not come under the zero tolerance policies adopted by the nation’s Catholic bishops in June.
Jessica Cortez, a 4 year old who disappeared from a park during the weekend, was found safe yesterday at a medical clinic. Police chief Martin Pomeroy said he could not yet fill in the gaps about where she had been for the last two days. She appeared dirty and disheveled, he said.
