Thomas Arthur Green, a 54 year old polygamist, who lives in Utah’s West Desert with five wives and an estimated 30 children, has defended his lifestyle on national television, arguing that it is his God-given right, has been charged with child rape, bigamy and failing to pay child support. An 11 year old Brooklyn girl was on a school trip to a Brooklyn park Wednesday when she disappeared behind a picnic house. She later told a chaperone she had been raped by two boys. Investigators are trying to determine if she was raped or consented to sex with the boys. Detectives said she apparently did have sex.

Under a deal tentatively reached yesterday by lawmakers distressed at revelations about sexual abuse by Catholic priests, clergy would be required to report child abuse by their peers to the authorities. Negotiations over the measure had been stalled for weeks, in part because Senate Republicans were reluctant to cross the Catholic Church so soon after the Senate broke with them over another bill requiring insurers to pay for prescription contraception.

Westchester County District Attorney Jeanine Pirro called on prosecutors around the state yesterday to mount a lobbying campaign to make it a crime to allow known sex abusers access to children. Her effort builds on a grand jury report released Tuesday, which slammed the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of New York for past decisions not to bring sex abuse allegations to civil authorities even after receiving multiple complaints against a priest.
