Cardinal Roger Mahony has admitted keeping secret a case of sexual abuse of a child by a priest who continued to molest children for another 14 years. Rev. Michael Baker had confessed to him personally in 1986 about problems in the past of acting out sexually with minors. In a letter dated May 14 to about 1,200 priests in the Los Angeles archdiocese, Mahony wrote that after counseling and treatment of Baker in 1986, he assigned Baker to a number of different parishes until 2000, when the archdiocese was sued
A Queens woman is facing up to seven years in jail for stabbing her husband after she discovered he had molested her 12 year old daughter. The accused molester faces just a year on third-degree sexual assault charges. The girl was sleeping Saturday when her stepdad, 47, allegedly assaulted her in the St. Albans home. The daughter told her mom the next morning and the 37 year old woman confronted her husband and during an argument, she jabbed him repeatedly with a knife. The court’s ruling on Megan’s Laws in more than 20 states, not including New York, could mean separate hearings to determine the risk posed by a sex criminal who has completed a prison sentence.
An 11 year old girl impregnated by James Kave, a 75 year old pervert, has given birth and now wants to raise her baby as a full-time mom. Kave, who lives in Harborview Towers, a residence for the elderly, has admitted having sex with the girl several times beginning in January 2001 and she became pregnant when she was 10. In the second case the Supreme Court will hear involving lists meant to keep tabs on potentially dangerous sex criminals, the court agreed Monday to consider a constitutional challenge to some registries of known sex offenders. The court will hear an appeal from Connecticut, where a federal judge stuck down the state’s sex offender registry last year because the judge found that the law violated the constitutional rights of past offenders. Their names were placed on the list without a chance to prove they are no longer dangerous to society.
Edward Cardinal Egan resisted compensating an alleged victim of a pedophile priest while giving the clergyman as much as $17,000 to settle bank debts and pay for a defense lawyer when the cardinal was bishop of Bridgeport. Court document reveal that the payment, made in 1989 after the Rev. Gavin O’Connor had been accused of molesting several boys between 1977 and 1985, was later condemned by the plaintiff’s lawyer as a payoff intended to buy O’Connor’s silence in the case pending against him and the diocese, the Hartford Courant reported
