SEX OFFENDER RESIDENCY BILL FAILS

A bill that would have restricted sex offenders from living within a half-mile of their victims failed to pass out of committee, to the disappointment of the bill’s author, Senator Judy Robson, D-Beloit.  The legislation pertains to sex offenders who are on probation or parole and whose victims request to be notified about the offender’s release into the community.  The bill had passed the Senate in March.  Robson proposed the legislation last year after being approached by a Janesville woman whose child was sexually assaulted and the offender was

STEPHANIE SCHMIDT: KANSAS

Stephanie’s Law, named for 20 year old Stephanie Schmidt of Kansas, is a sexual predator law that allows the state to keep those convicted of sex crimes confined after they have completed their sentences, if in the judgment of professionals they should not be released.  The Kansas Supreme Court struck down the law, but the US Supreme Court upheld it.  Stephanie was killed the night of June 30, 1993, three days before her 21st birthday, after accepting a ride home from a co-worker.  She and Donald Ray Gideon had worked

SUSPECT SKETCH IN MORGAN NICK CASE UPDATED

Investigators from the multiple law enforcement agencies assigned to the Morgan Nick abduction case have updated their files to include a new sketch of an unknown man wanted for questioning in connection with the disappearance of the child.
