Long-standing concerns about the number of sex offenders in the Mastic area surfaced amongparents, civic leaders and school officials yesterday, one day after a William Floyd High Schoolstudent was sexually assaulted less than three blocks from school. In a move that prompted one legislator to warn that it could give the public a false sense of security, the county Legislature recently passed a bill stating that sex offenders are not welcome in general emergency shelters.  The legislation passed by a vote of 17-0, with one abstention.  The resolution, introduced by Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), would require registered sex offenders, when entering an emergency shelter, to notify a shelter manager, a shelter employee, or a shelter volunteer of their sex offender status.  to make sure they still have

Suffolk’s sex offenders will not be allowed into the county’s emergency shelters if a big storm or other disaster hits Long Island, once a bill legislators approved yesterday becomes law.  The bill, sponsored by Legis. Kate Browning (WF-Shirley), requires the county to establish separate housing quarters for sex offenders for used in case of an emergency of natural disaster.  Sex offenders would be required to alert the shelter’s manager to their status.

Brian Tillis, a 36 year old Fishers Island man, was arrested yesterday for failing to register as a sex offender after refusing to provide authorities with his photograph.  Tillis, who was convicted of a felony sex offense against a female in 1994, was charged with a felony count of failure to register in accordance to the state correction law.
