Mayor Bloomberg yesterday called for the state to begin taking genetic samples from everyone convicted of a crime.  The state currently requires only felons to submit DNA samples, but Governor Pataki wants a new law to apply to misdemeanor convictions.  After all, most sex offenders and murderers are not specialists, Bloomberg said outside Bellevue Hospital, where the city is building a $250 million forensics laboratory.  They get convicted of every crime in the book, including more minor offenses like petty larceny and trespassing, he added.  Each time that happens, it

In a national survey analyzing the performance of sex-offender registries and community-notification programs in all 50 states and the District of Columbia, New York State earned a grade of D.  Wisconsin got an A and Florida aced all with A-plus.  

The survey was released by Stony Brook-based parents for Megan’s Law.  It offers a bleak outlook on how well states are protecting potential and past victims of sex crimes.  it concluded that 25 states scored F’s, eight got D’s, 13 received C’s, three scored B’s and two got A’s.

More than 1,100 people wanted for violent sex crimes have been arrested in a weeklong roundup of fugitives.  The arrests were made as part of Operation Falcon II, (Federal and Local Cops Organized Nationally) a nationwide dragnet timed to coincide with National Victims Rights Week.  The massive fugitive dragnet took place the week of April 17-23 in the western half of the United States.  Deputy US marshals teamed up with their state, local, and federal  colleagues in the largest fugitive sweep to ever primarily focus on violent sex offenders.  Last

A group of Queens residents says state officials terrified them when they posted an online list showing 135 sexual predators living in East Elmhurst, and didn’t make it clear most are locked up on Rikers Island.  Many sex offenders on the East Elmhurst list are listed as living on Hazen Street, which covers Rikers but also a residential area.

Stephen A. Marshall, a 20 year old Canadian man who shot two sex offenders to death in Maine, got their names from the state’s online sex offender registry.  Marshall committed suicide Sunday in Boston after being cornered by police.  The victims were killed at their homes 25 miles apart but they were among 34 names Marshall had looked up on the state Web site.  This renews fears that such lists expose ex-convicts to vigilante violence.
