Suffolk legislators approved a plan Tuesday to place the county’s homeless sex offenders in places that would be kept secret during the site-selection process, though county Executive Steve Levy signaled he would veto the measure.  The legislation would create a network of mini-shelters throughout the county and effectively close the Southampton trailers where the homeless sex offenders have been living. The suspension of Laurence E. Nelson, a 44 year old YMCA worker in the state of Minnesota, started with an investigation by Ulster County Sheriff’s deputies.  The sheriff’s Internet Crimes Against Children Taskforce alerted cops in Minnesota after Nelson solicited sex from an Ulster County deputy posing as a 14 year old girl in an online chat room.  Nelson was charged with his state’s equivalent of soliciting a child for sexual conduct over the internet and was suspended from his part-time job as an outreach worker for homeless youth.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty urged prosecutors Wednesday to open a perjury investigation against a pardoned sex offender now facing new molestation charges in a case that could pose problems for the Republican’s presidential ambitions.  Pawlenty asked two county attorneys to investigate whether Jeremy Giefer, 26, of Vernon Center, lied on his application for a pardon, which requires the petitioner to swear he’s been law-abiding.  Pawlenty’s administration also suspended the day care license of Giefer’s wife, effective Wednesday, saying, the health, safety, and rights of

George Rodriguez, a 21 year old registered sex offender on probation
for a previous rape conviction, has been charged in the rape of a 16
year old girl.  Rodriguez, of Ash Street in Central Islip, was arrested
Tuesday on charges of second-degree rape, third-degree criminal sex
act, use of a child in a sexual performance and endangering the welfare
of a child.

Jose Poulose, a 44 year old Long Island cardiologist, has pleaded
guilty in an Internet sex sting in which he allegedly used links to an
explicit video, dirty talk and a promise of Godiva chocolates to lure
an undercover detective posting as a 14 year old girl to a sexual
encounter.  Poulose, of Mineola, who practices in Williston Park, faces
a likely sentence of 5 years’ probation, a $5,000 fine, mandatory sex
offender registration and treatment, and restrictions on Internet
access.

Frank Kuni, a sex offender, admitted Wednesday that he had lied on
forms to get a job as a US Census taker, blaming it on a series of
mix-ups and his desperation to get a job.  Kuni could face up to 16
years in federal prison, though a much shorter term is likely when he
is sentenced on March 2.  Kuni was convicted in 1996 for sexually
assaulting a girl and having inappropriate contact with another.
