Brookhaven Councilwoman Kathy Walsh (R-Centereach) has proposed a local law to prohibit morethan two registered sex offenders from residing in the same one-family dwelling.  The intentis to limit the saturation of registered sex offenders, Walsh said, adding that the approval ofthis law would amend Chapter 55 of the code of the Town of Brookhaven’s Child Protection Act. According to Laura Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan’s Law, town officials recentlyamended their local code to be consistent with Suffolk County law, which states that registeredsex offenders

The investigation of the disappearance of  a 12 year old girl from Vermontzeroed in on her uncle yesterday, with police searching his home while he was arraigned on sexcharges in an unrelated case.  Michael Jacques, a registered sex offender and one of the lastpeople seen with Brooke Bennett before she vanished, pleaded not guilty to a charge of aggravatedsexual assault and was held in lieu of $250,000 bail.  Jacques is called a person ofinterest in Brooke’s case.

Fred Topous, Jr., a 45 year old registered sex offender who also pleaded guilty to twobreaking and entering charges in the 1980s, is the winner of last week’s $57 million Mega Millionslottery.  Topous was discharged from Michigan Department of Corrections supervision in October2006.  His rap sheet includes assault with intent to commit sexual penetration, and breakingand entering.  He will take a $34 million payout.
