Democratic legislators in Nassau today intend to propose a new law that would bar convicted sex offenders registered under Megan’s Law from establishing a residence within 600 feet of schools or playgrounds.  The proposal is sponsored by Legislator Kevan Abrahams (D-Hempstead) and it is an extension of the state Sex Offender Registration Act, which requires offenders to register on a database that tracks their whereabouts.  The new proposal would bar the most violent sex offenders, Levels 2 and 3, from permanently or temporarily living within 600 feet of public or

A plan that would make it illegal for registered sex offenders to live within 500 feet of a public park and within 1,000 feet of a school in the Town of Huntington goes before the town board tonight at 7.  The proposal, by Republican Councilman Mark Capodanno, is just the natural continuation of Megan’s Law, he said.  Megan’s Law requires convicted sex offenders to register their residence with the state and gives the state permission to make this information public.

A group of convicted sex offenders has filed suit claiming a local law making it illegal forthem to live or travel almost anywhere within city limits is unconstitutional. The plaintiffscontend the law amounts to a sentence of banishment. US District Judge Robert Pratt issued an order blocking enforcement of an Iowa law that prohibits sex offenders from living within 2,000 feet of a school or day care center.  The order came in a federal lawsuit filed by the Iowa Civil Liberties Union last month and expanded Friday to include all people who are subject to the residency restriction.  The lawsuit said the requirement makes it nearly impossible for an offender to find a place to live because there is virtually no place in towns or urban areas in
