SUFFOLK SEX OFFENDERS TOUGHER TRACKING (Legislators to shut trailers, order new checks by police)

BELLONE PUSHES LAWMAKERS ON SEX OFFENDER BILL

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone is pressing lawmakers to act Tuesday on an emergencybill requiring more aggressive monitoring of the county’s 1,106 convicted sex offenders.  Heplans to seek a certificate of necessity, which bypasses the committee process and publichearings that require advance notice.  Suffolk police would contract with Parents for Megan’sLaw, a nonprofit that seeks to prevent child sexual abuse to step up enforcement of requirementsthat convicted sex offenders accurately register their current addresses with police.  Bellonealso will close trailers on the East End that house 38 homeless

SOUTHOLD MAN FACES WEAPONS, STALKING CHARGES

Scott A. Kessler, a 50 year old Southold man, faces charges of stalking and harassment in adomestic incident Monday and was found to be in possession of a .45-caliber pistol and ahigh-capacity ammunition magazine.  He was charged with fourth degree stalking, second degreeharassment and two counts of third degree criminal possession of a weapon.

IN 2 TRAILERS, THE NEIGHBORS NOBODY WANTS

MAN ARRESTED FOR POSSESSION OF CHILD PORNOGRAPHY

Philip Nicolopoulos, a 48 year old Setauket man, was arrested for possessing childpornography after his computers were seized from his 27 Branch Lane home just 1/2 mile fromArrowhead Elementary School.  He has been charged with two counts of Possession of a SexualPerformance by a Child.

EDITORIAL: SHELTER PLAN IS BETTER FOR SEX OFFENDERS

Housing homeless sex offenders in Suffolk County’s shelter system — but away from homelessfamilies — and more intensely monitoring all registered sex offenders, is a plan that couldfinally solve a problem that has bedeviled the county for years.  The Suffolk legislatureshould approve the proposal, which would allow Suffolk to close trailers in Westhampton andRiverside currently housing 38 homeless offenders, and avoid clustering the men in any othercommunities.  Rather than continuing to lavish time, attention and resources on the fewoffenders who are homeless, the plan developed by Suffolk County police
