TEACHER MISCONDUCT ALLEGED

Edward G. Wylie, 41, a Florida teacher, was arrested and charged with two counts of sex with a minor. Pinellas County school officials were unaware when he was hired that his license was revoked in 1988 and he had a 16 year history of inappropriate relationships with students.  Because of a clerical error the revocation did not appear in Florida Department of Education computer records.

PARTIAL ACQUITTAL IN SEX TRIAL

Daniel Toy, 38, is accused of showing an 8 year old girl pornographic pictures and movies and sexually abusing her

over a period of months.  A Riverhead jury acquitted the Westhampton man of raping, sodomizing and sexually abusing

the girl.  According to Newsday, the acquittal came even though he signed four confessions detailing the alleged acts.

US EYES DISCIPLINARY STEPS IN WAKE OF MOLESTATION REPORT

A 19 year old US Marine stationed at the Futemma Air Station in Ginowan was arrested on suspicion of breaking into a home in the city of Okinawa and molesting a 14 year old junior high school girl while she was sleeping.  According to this Newsday article, the US is considering restrictions on US military personal in the aftermath of the allegation.  When US servicemen in Okinawa raped a school girl in 1995, a late-night curfew was imposed on US soldiers at bases in the southwestern Japanese perfecture.

WASHINGTON: A MEGAN’S LAW FOR CAMPUSES

Under Republican Rep. Matt Salmon’s legislation, universities would be required to make public information about convicted sex offenders attending or working at most institutions of higher learning.  The House passed the legislation unanimously without much attention last month.  According to Newsday, the Campus Protection Act would apply to colleges and universities that receive federal funding.  It was attached to an education bill that makes technical changes to a 1998 student aid law.  The Senate has not yet taken up a companion bill.    The legislation was drafted by Salmon to close
