HIGH COURT: RAPE CASES BELONG ON LOCAL LEVEL

According to Newsday, the Supreme Court ruled that Congress trampled on states’ rights when it passed the Violence Against Women Act allowing rape victims to sue their attackers in federal court.  The high court’s 5 to 4 ruling threw out the key provision of the 1994 act.

NYC COP FACING SEX ABUSE CHARGES

Detective James Lyons, 43, of Rocky Point, was arrested in Suffolk County and charged with sexual abuse and endangering the welfare of a 16 year old girl.  He has been suspended from his post at the 111th precinct in Bayside, Queens.  He was released from First District Court after posting $200 bail.

CONTROVERSIAL TACK ON SEX ABUSE

Bishop Edward M. Egan, named to replace Cardinal John O’Connor, said that a priest accused of abusing a young man in the 1960’s was like an independent contractor, and the church was not liable for the priest’s misconduct.  According to Newsday, activists against sex abuse by priests were enraged by the remark and one of them said it was shameful and sinful.

LADY TEACHER WAS TEEN’S SEX-ED TUTOR

Nicole Matarese, 29, a Brooklyn high-school teacher from Staten Island, admitted to having a sexual relationship with a 15 year old male student.  The Board of Education said it will fire her.  She is charged with endangering the welfare of a child.

EAST PATCHOGUE MAN ARRESTED IN SEX CASE

Wilfredo A. Lopez, 32, was arrested for allegedly grabbing a young girl he met while swimming and making her touch

him inappropriately.  He started talking to two 10 year old girls but the conversation turned vulgar and the girls tried to leave.  He grabbed one of the girl’s hands and placed it on his crotch.  The girls friend kicked him and they escaped, they ran to a nearby home to call police.  He was arraigned on May 7th on first degree sexual abuse and is being held on $10,000 bail.
