Jay Marcus, a 45 year old Westbury carpenter, has been sentenced to 30 months in prison for receiving and possessing child pornography. A defense attorney for Marcus told jurors that they were likely to be revolted by his client’s alleged activities. The government will show you images that are such you may want to throw up. The Rev. Charles Papa, a well-liked pastor at St. Louis de Montfort Church, visited hundreds of pornographic Web sites from his rectory computer.  Papa’s friends say he admitted to his actions.  He left the Sound Beach parish last month to seek counseling and a spokeswoman for the Diocese of Rockville Centre said he is on a medical leave of absence to treat depression.  Papa’s critics charge the Web sites he had been visiting involved child pornography and revealed a possible sexual interest in young boys.

David Westerfield, a 50 year old design engineer, charged with murder and kidnapping in the disappearance of 7 year old Danielle van Dam, who disappeared from her San Diego home in February was convicted August 21, 2002 and now has been sentenced to death. Westerfield was also convicted of possessing child pornography by a jury that deliberated for nearly 10 days.

Mark Bates, a 33 year old Texas man, was behind a worldwide e-mail ring that traded pornographic images of children, some as young as 18 months old. He was sentenced to the maximum of 30 years in federal prison yesterday. He was the moderator of the Candyman e-mail group that served more than 6,000 users, who contributed and received images.

James Andrew Smith, a businessman and former pastor, was charged with possessing child pornography after a photo of a nude boy appeared during a computer slide presentation he gave at work.  Employees at Exel Inc. told police when Smith finished a computer slide show on September 4, he tried to open another document on his laptop.  The image of the young, nude boy appeared on screen.
