Today the FBI announced the results of an unprecedented five-day nationwide sweep targetingcriminals involved in trafficking children for prostitution in the United States.  The stings,dubbed Operation Cross Country, spanned 16 cities and resulted in the arrest of 389 people andthe recovery of 21 children.  – In Kansas, Don L. Elbert, III forced three underage sisters – two of whom were 14 year oldtwins – into prostitution.  He was captured and pled guilty to child sex trafficking in Mary2007.  In January, he was sentenced to eight years in prison. –

Today, the FBI, the Department of Justice and the National Center for Missing and ExploitedChildren joined together to mark the five-year anniversary of the Innocence Lost initiative andto announce recent enforcement actions taken against criminals engaged in the domestic traffickingof children for prostitution.  To date, Innocence Lost investigations have led to theconviction of 308 individuals on a combination of state and federal charges.  Moreimportantly, their efforts have led to the recovery of 433 child victims.

United States Attorney McGregor W. Scott announced today that a federal grand jury returned a superseding indictment against Lavon Carter, Jr., 20, of Vallejo, and his mother Laverne Vaughn, 36, also of Vallejo, charging them with various crimes involving the sex trafficking of a minor.  Previously, a federal grand jury had returned an indictment charging Carter with one count of sex trafficking of children, and three counts of interstate transportation of a minor with the intent that the minor engage in prostitution.  The superseding indictment returned today, adds Vaughn as
