A search of newspaper databases around the country produced more than 50 cases of community or school coaches who have been charged with or convicted of sexually abusing more than 100 of their young athletes in the last few years.  Experts say that’s probably jut the tip of a larger problem.  Shrouded in silence and cover-up, sexual abuse of young athletes is hard to stop and hard to prove.  Predators are difficult to catch.

Elijah Slaughter, a 61 year old former Jacksonville High School teacher and track coach, pleaded guilty on Friday to felony charges of enticing a child for immoral purposes and interfering with the custody of a child.  He was located holed up in a University Inn motel room with a 14 year old girl.  She was a former student of his.  Under a plea bargain arraignment, Slaughter is to receive a seven year sentence for his actions.  His attorney’s have applied for his immediate release on probation.  A sentencing hearing has

Donald E. Wilhelm, a 45 year old umpire and coach in the Ellenville Little League for 20 years,has been charged with receiving child pornography over the Internet. He downloaded computer imagesof minors in sexually explicit conduct onto his home computer and computer disks. The images werecollected from various Internet sites between August 1999 and January 4, 2002. He was arraigned andreleased on $10,000 bond.

Christopher Reardon, a former youth minister and YMCA swim coach, pleaded guilty to raping andmolesting boys in what prosecutors called the biggest child sex-abuse case in Massachusettshistory. Taylor, a 35 year old corrections officer and Little League baseball coach, is accused of abducting, sexually assaulting and attempting to kill an 8 year old girl.  He surrendered to police and was extradited from Illinois.  His wife, Colette, had called authorities to report her husband missing.  She told officers she and Taylor had argued over his resemblance to a police sketch of the suspect in the attack and similarities between their car and the description of the vehicle the suspect was driving.  It was the publicity surrounding
