Jesper and Julie Myrfors of Sedro-Wooley, Washington, participated in an elaborate Facebookhoax to keep their 15 year old daughter from dating a registered sex offender.  The teenagerstarted seeing William Liam Elms in April.  A few months later the Myrfors discovered thatElms was a registered level 1 ex offender under state supervision for a third degree childmolestation conviction.  They told their daughter to stop seeing him, but the couple wasunwilling to end their biweekly visits.  The parents decided to friend Elms on Facebook underthe guise of a fictional 15 year

James Gates, 55, is accused of trying to kidnap 2 year old Myla Davis  from a popularplay site for kids.  Myla’s dad, Kelly Davis, stopped the attempted kidnapping and then chasedthe suspect through the streets of Chicago. At 9:30 p.m., Myla and her 4 year old sister weresliding off Daley Plaza’s Picasso sculpture when a man grabbed her by the arm, declaring her as hisdaughter and calling her Goldilocks.  He insisted the Davis, who was already positionedbetween Myla and the would be abductor, get out of the way.

Mark Barber, a 50 year old former Nassau correction officer, is accused of sexually abusingseveral female inmates.  The prosecutor said he chose his victims carefully, selecting thosewho would be least believable if they ever complained about him.  Jurors are expected to begindeliberating Tuesday on the charges against Barber that include rape, official misconduct, forcibletouching and promoting prison contraband.  If he is found guilty of the most serious chargesagainst him he faces up to 20 years in prison.  Between 2007 and 2009, Barber madearrangements so he could be alone

Damien O’Brien, a 32 year old East Moriches man, was arrested Wednesday and charged withpossession of child pornography.  O’Brien, of 13 Linda Lane, turned himself intoofficers.  Investigators had executed a search warrant at O’Brien’s home last week and seizedcomputers, CDs and DVDs that contained a large quantity of child pornography.

Shawn Mead, a 44 year old custodian at Lincoln Avenue Elementary School in Sayville, wasarrested early Tuesday and charged with possessing child pornography.  Mead, of Bailey Avenuein Patchogue, was arrested after an undercover investigation into individuals trading childpornography online.  He is charged with one count of possessing a sexual performance by achild.

Five East End sex offenders were arrested in a multiagency, five-day sting to check theircompliance with state registration mandates.  In Operation Lighthouse, federal and localenforcement visited the homes of 60 sex offenders between July 9 and July 13 and found five had notfully complied with the law.  At least five other police departments took part in OperationLighthouse: Suffolk, Southampton Town, Southampton Village, Southold Town and East Hampton Town.
