New law to revamp military investigations into sexual assault, harassment

Dec. 29 (UPI) — Commanders will no longer be involved in military sexual harassment or sexual assault investigations under a new federal law named for a murdered Fort Hood soldier that goes into effect Saturday.

Provisions of the I Am Vanessa Guillén Act were included in the $770 billion National Defense Authorization Act that was signed by President Biden on Monday.

Long Island Community Hospital is now a Sexual Assault Forensic Examine-designated hospital

The New York State Department of Health has recognized Long Island Community Hospital in Patchogue as a Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner, or SAFE, designated hospital. The hospital is one of four in Suffolk County with the designation. The hospital partners with Victims Bureau of Suffolk County, providing specially trained SAFE examiners to victims at the hospital. “Receiving designation as a SAFE hospital allows Long Island Community Hospital to meet a growing healthcare concern in our community,” President and Chief Executive Officer Richard Margulis said in a statement.

Newport News police selected for federal program teaching teens about human trafficking

Newport News police officers will be teaching high school students signs to help them avoid and prevent human trafficking.

Hampton Roads was one of two sites across the country selected to pilot the federal program, which is being called TraffickSTOP.

NEW YORK (AP) — Another accuser took the witness stand on Monday at R. Kelly’s sex-trafficking trial, testifying that the R&B superstar sexually abused her on his tour bus and in hotel rooms when she was still a high school student and an aspiring singer.
