MURRAY, Iowa — Thursday is the first day of Child Abuse Prevention Month. April is dedicated to raising awareness.
That’s why 12-year-old Bella Cosner is taking her mission to school. Murray students dressed up in blue and made pinwheels to show their support for her cause.
Cosner said she survived child abuse and support from a big family to lean on. They encouraged her to find confidence by volunteering and participating in pageants.

DUXBURY, MASS. (AP) — The parents of a Massachusetts man who died of a drug overdose last year have sued their son’s middle school gym teacher who they allege repeatedly raped him, and the school district for failing to protect the boy.
Joseph and Melissa Foley are seeking $1 million in a lawsuit filed in Plymouth Superior Court this week against the Duxbury Public Schools and teacher John Blake.
Their son, Joseph Parker Foley, died last October at age 27, their attorney, Jason Morgan, told The Patriot Ledger.

The former principal of a Louisiana middle school has been arrested after confessing to having sex with a teen boy, authorities said.
Ashleigh Landry, 44, of Raceland was the head of Lockport Middle School when she allegedly had sex with the unidentified teen, the Lafourche Parish Sheriff’s Office said Wednesday.
Deputies began to investigate Landry earlier this month after learning that she allegedly had been sexting with the teen.
During an interview with detectives, Landry admitted to sending the messages and having sex with him, authorities said.

Miami police have arrested a man in connection to the kidnapping, sexual assault and shooting of a 12-year-old boy over the weekend, investigators said Tuesday.
Aliex Santiesteban, 43, was taken into custody around 3 a.m. Tuesday, just days after the boy was hospitalized in critical condition, the Miami-Dade Police Department said in a news release.

SHICKSHINNY — A Hunlock Township man awaiting sentencing after admitting he sexually assaulted two girls nearly 40 years ago was arrested Tuesday on allegations he sexually abused a boy inside Roaring Brook Baptist Church.
Richard Garnett, 68, of Roaring Brook Drive, is accused of sexually assaulting a boy while he was a games director volunteer during AWANA classes inside the church, according to court records.
State police allege the assaults occurred between 2004 and 2006 in the basement of the church while other children participated in AWANA activities

A Hays man pleaded guilty to a pair of child sex crimes Tuesday.

Christopher Lynn Cox, 21, pleaded guilty to criminal sodomy and sexual battery in Ellis County District Court. Criminal sodomy is a level three person felony and sexual battery is a misdemeanor.

According to court documents, the sodomy charges stem from an incident on Feb. 17, 2020, where Cox Provided alcohol and had sex with a 14-year-old girl.
