DAYTONA BEACH — A former Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University professor sentenced to 15 years in prison for sexual misconduct with a child was set free by a judge while the ex-educator appeals his sentence.
The decision by Senior Judge R. Michael Hutcheson to release Mark Fugler outraged Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood, who posted several critical tweets Friday.

(CNN)Disgraced Cardinal George Pell will take his case to Australia’s High Court in a final attempt to overturn his conviction on five charges of child sexual assault.
The High Court of Australia confirmed Tuesday that an application has been filed by Pell’s legal team to seek leave to appeal his conviction.
The move follows a failed bid to have the cardinal’s conviction quashed in the appeals court, leaving the High Court as the only means of clearing his name and avoiding a six-year prison sentence.

A man accused of kidnapping and rape was accidentally released from Fulton County Jail in Georgia today, leaving his victim in fear for her life.
According to WSB in Atlanta, Justin Jackson allegedly kidnapped his child’s mother and tortured her for three days. In an interview, the victim said she was the one who alerted law enforcement that Jackson was out.
“They didn’t even know he was out until I contacted them,” the woman said. “That really hurts.”

GREENSBORO — It was revealed in court Wednesday that the employee alleged to have improperly touched a minor at a group home for troubled youth — co-owned by Deputy Police Chief James Hinson — has a history of being accused of sex crimes with underage children.
On Monday, the Guilford County Sheriff’s Office charged Richard Vernell Heath with one count of statutory sex offense and two counts of indecent liberties with a child, according to court records. Heath, 51, was arrested Tuesday and is facing life in prison

An “evil” Oregon babysitter who sexually abused and tortured three sisters under his care has been sentenced to 270 years in prison after more than a decade of delays, federal prosecutors said.
Andrew Franklin Kowalczyk, 44, was sentenced Monday after the former Portland man was convicted on nine counts of producing child pornography in December by a jury that deliberated for just 20 minutes following his four-day trial, the US Attorney’s Office for the District of Oregon announced Monday.
