John J. Nelson, a 43 year old upstate man, was arrested Wednesday night in East Hampton as part of a police sting to catch online predators.  He began communicating in an Internet chat room with an undercover East Hampton officer several days ago, believing her to be a 14 year old girl.  He arranged to meet her in East Hampton, where he planned to pick her up and take her back to his hotel room in Ronkonkoma to engage in sexual acts.  Nelson is charged with first degree attempted dissemination

David Chappel, a 42 year old emergency medical technician from Connecticut, was arrested on Long Island for arranging to have sex with what he thought was a 14 year old boy he met on the Internet.  On Thursday evening, Chappel arrived for the Hicksville rendezvous with a laptop computer and a digital video camera but his date turned out to be a detective who arrested him.  He has been charged with possession of child pornography on his computer, promoting an obscene sexual performance by a child and two counts of

Internet sex stings have snared two New York City teachers.  Daniel Gettens, 53, was arrested Monday evening at Sacred Heart of Jesus grammar school in Bayside as he waited for what he thought was a 14 year old girl he met in an AOL chat room.  He was awaiting arraignment last night for attempted dissemination of indecent material to minors, attempted criminal performance of a sexual act, and attempted endangering the welfare of a child.  He was immediately fired, as per diocesan policy.

Three days before Gettens was arrested, cops

Joseph Rizzo, a 21 year old construction worker from Inwood, was arrested by Nassau police and charged with third-degree rape for allegedly forcing a 15 year old girl he had met over the Internet to have sex with him in his car. Rizzo has previously been arrested in Pennsylvania for allegedly sending child pornography over the Internet.

The Rev. Shamaun Beas, a 35 year old priest, was arrested in an Internet sex sting after allegedly arranging to meet someone he thought was a 14 year old girl. He was charged with offenses including sexually abusive activity involving a child and using a computer to commit a crime. He was arrested after driving by a home near Detroit where he had agreed to meet an investigator posing as the teenage girl in an Internet chat room. Beas is a visiting priest from Pakistan.

Ryan Hogan, a 24 year old Brooklyn firefighter, was arrested yesterday for allegedly trying to lure what he thought was a 14 year old girl into having sex. He allegedly did some of the illicit wooing on a firehouse computer at Engine 237 in Bushwick. The teen online was an adult member of a watchdog group called Perverted Justice that patrols Net chat rooms to catch what it calls wanna-be pedophiles. Hogan was released on a $250,000 bond. A crew member from the NBC-TV show Dateline was filming the sting
