According to Parents for Megan’s Law, the average sexual offender is 31 years old, white and male.  Less than half (about 42 percent) report having never been married.  Roughly the same percentages (35 to 40 percent) are repeat offenders.  Furthermore, fully 93 percent of sexual assault victims know their attacker as either family members or acquaintances. Suffolk County’s much-criticized sex offender housing plan for the Town of Babylon wassquashed Tuesday, but residents say the alternative plan may create an even bigger problem. The county planned on setting up a shelter for homeless sex offenders in industrial areas in EastFarmingdale and other spots.  Instead, the county will use a voucher system and give homelesssex offenders $90 a day to find housing they will be responsible for keeping their addressescurrent.  Critics of the new plans say it doesn’t put enough restrictions on where the sexoffenders live or provide

Suffolk’s Department of Social Services says it’s considering housing homeless sex offendersat a location in Farmingdale, much to the opposition of many in the community.  One of thesites being considered is an industrial area on Gaza Boulevard.  However, the Adventurelandtheme park, an indoor fun center and two movie theaters are all within a mile.

In the days before his death, Thomas Pauli, a homeless sex offender in Grand Rapids,Michigan, tried to get a bed at two different shelters, but was turned away.  Both sheltersare within 1,000 feet of Central Catholic High School.  Pauli was prohibited from residing atthe shelters, even for a night.  The shelters near public parks are also prohibited areas forsex offenders.  So, Pauli slept outside, behind a recycling shop.  That’s where hislifeless body was found, crouched on hands and knees in the snow, apparently frozen to death.
