Parents should check the state’s sex offender registry to see if any sexual predators are living in their neighborhood before sending their kids out trick-or-treating tonight.  According to the New York State Department of Criminal Justice, there are thousands of registered sex offenders living in the five boroughs.  To check the registry, lo on to http://criminaljustice.state.ny.us.

Britain said yesterday it will send jailers to remote Pitcairn Island in the Pacific, where six people, a tenth of the population, lost their final appeal against convictions for child rape and indecent assault.  The failed appeal was to Britain’s Privy Council.  Four men were found guilty of rape and sentenced to between two and six years jail.  Two others were convicted of indecent assault and sentenced to community service.

After an audit that said sex offenders wearing global positioning system devices were not monitored at all times by Nassau probation officials, a $500,000 state grant will help them with more technology and staffing to monitor high-risk offenders 24 hours a day, seven days a week.  The grant will help the county to computerize law enforcement databases by next year.  As part of the program, other high-risk violent offenders could be subjected to satellite tracking.  The grant also allows the county to expand its use of polygraph tests on sex
