Michael Brennan, a 64 year old man who raised suspicions after asking
children in Portsmouth, NH, to help him find his puppy, was discovered
to be a sex offender.  Brennan, an unregistered sex offender, has been
living in South Berwick.  He was arrested last week on an unrelated
warrant out of York.  Records showed he was a sex offender and had not
registered since October.  Brennan was convicted of one count of gross
sexual assault in 1984 in Biddeford.

Two teachers at a the Bedford Hills elementary school in Westchester have been suspended and their principal placed on paid leave while authorities try to determine if they failed to report a case of child abuse.  The suspect was identified as Cesar Joel Sagastume-Morales, a 27-year-old construction worker, who immigrated from Guatemala.  School officials refused to say whether the suspensions are connected to the alleged rape of a 9-year-old girl and it was not clear what role the educators may have had in the case.

Anthony Correnti, a 28-year-old former music teacher, pleaded guilty to six of the 52 counts with which he was indicted in Suffolk, as part of a plea bargain in 2004.  In return for his plea, he was sentenced to 10 to 30 years in prison.  He will be eligible for parole after serving the minimum of 10 years.  He faces similar charges in Nassau and Manhattan.  The computerized inventory of girls in various stages of electronic courtship and seduction was the road map for an investigation that would span three

Victim’s advocates are praising the state Legislature’s recent enactment of two laws, one that lifts the statute of limitations on rape and another that expands the state’s criminal DNA databank, evidence heavily relied upon for the conviction of sex offenders.  The passage of both was announced this week, although Governor George Pataki signed the two bills at the end of June.   The five-year statute of limitations on rape, a Class B felony, is 40 years old.  The lifting of this statute applies to the crimes of rape in the first

Legislator Kate Browning (WFP-Shirley), a Suffolk lawmaker, filed legislation yesterday that would prevent more than one registered sex offender from living at the same residence.  Browning announced the proposed bill in Mastic, down the block from 115 Eleanor Avenue, a small home that houses four registered Level 3 sex offenders, considered to be the most dangerous.  Brookhaven Supervisor Brian Foley said the town is looking into the constitutionality of changing its zoning laws to break up sex offender clusters.  Laura Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan’s Law, said the

Attorney general Alberto Gonzales announced a new public service campaign yesterday that will warn teenage girls against posting information on the Internet that could put them at risk of attack by child predators.  Every day, these predators are looking for someone to hurt, Gonzales said.  Every day, we must educate parents and children about the threat.  According to a Justice Department study, one in seven children using the Internet has been sexually solicited and one in three has been exposed to unwanted sexual material.  One in 11 has been harassed.
