A search was on the night of April 24 for three masked kidnappers who brazenly abducted 13 yearold Mara Downes, a Catholic schoolgirl, in front of her Rockalnd County house, then abandoned herunscathed in the trunk of a stolen car. Cops were looking for two men and a woman involved in thekidnapping. The girl was thrown into the trunk of a Toyota Camry. An Amber Alert was sent out ascops searched the area for 2 1/2 hours before finding the Camry abandoned on Homer

The Rev. James Nyhan, a 60 year old Roman Catholic priest, pleaded guilty to three counts of assault and battery, avoiding a trial that was about to start on charges alleging he sexually abused two boys more than 25 years ago.  He was sentenced to 30 years in prison but the sentence was suspended to five years’ probation.  The plea came as a jury was being selected for the trial.  Nyhan had been charged with committing lewd acts on children under the age of 14.  As part of the plea,

A law was passed by the state legislature and signed by Rio Governor Rosinha Matheus last month that averts groping and other unwanted sexual advances.  Female commuters filled women-only, pink-striped subway cars yesterday on the first day of the program.  Frequent complaints from women commuters about sexual harassment in crowded railway cars had prompted state legislators to pass the bill.

A group of Queens residents says state officials terrified them when they posted an online list showing 135 sexual predators living in East Elmhurst, and didn’t make it clear most are locked up on Rikers Island.  Many sex offenders on the East Elmhurst list are listed as living on Hazen Street, which covers Rikers but also a residential area.

John Collins, a 57 year old New Jersey teacher at Memorial Middle School in Eatontown, has been sentenced to 10 years in state prison for sexually assaulting two teenage female students.  He pleaded guilty to having sex with a 15 year old who used to be one of his students.  She said she had been sexually assaulted by Collins in 2000 when she was 13 years old.
