John Phillips, a 19 year old Uniondale youth counselor, was arraigned April 4 on charges that he sexually abused a teenager at a recreation center and made inappropriate sexual comments to others.  Phillips, of 689 Lafayette Avenue, was ordered held in lieu of $1,500 bail.  He is charged with third degree sexual abuse, two counts of endangering the welfare of a child, and fourth degree possession of a dangerous weapon, for purchasing brass knuckles.  An investigation into his conduct began on March 27 after staff members at the Uniondale Community

William Ryerson, a 44 year old former county corrections officer, has pleaded guilty to a child pornography charge and faces up to 15 years in state prison.  He pleaded guilty to one count of use of a child in a sexual performance.  He was arrested in March 2002 for photographing and having sexual contact with two girls, ages 11 and 15, and keeping the images on his computer.  He remains free on $15,000 bail and sentencing has been set for May 27.

Carlos Desuze, a 32 year old former youth minister from Baldwin, was charged with third degree statutory rape yesterday after a 17 year old girl told her parents and police she was having a sexual relationship with the minister that began when she was 16.  Desuze was arrested at his parents home at 984 Steele Blvd., in Freeport.  He had been employed as a youth minister for the Word of Life Ministries in Freeport for the past five years until a month ago.  He knew the teen and her family

Gwendolyn Pharr, a 42 year old Brooklyn woman on trial for allegedly raping a teenage boy, is under investigation for the murder of a former boyfriend.  Pharr, of 315 Livonia Avenue – who is free pending the rape trial – testified before a grand jury recently regarding her ex-boyfriend’s death.  The grand jury is considering indicting her on a murder charge in connection with the death.  Meanwhile, the mother of two is accused of having sex with a 13 year old boy in a Brooklyn community center.  She testified yesterday

A 10 year old New Jersey boy used a baseball bat to fatally beat a 3 year old boy he dragged out of a library and sexually assaulted before dumping his body in a drainage ditch.  Little Amir Beeks was at the Henry Inman Library in the Colonia section of Woodbridge, New Jersey, with relatives March 26 when the 10 year old, who he didn’t know, forced him from the building and launched his grisly attack around 4:25 p.m.  Amir was found lying face down in a ditch 35 minutes

The Rev. Louis E. Miller, a 72 year old retired Roman Catholic priest, pleaded guilty yesterday to sexually abusing 21 children.  I remember these children very well, Miller said as the judge read the names of each victim.  I remember fondling these children.  He pleaded guilty as his trial was set to begin on 44 counts of indecent and immoral practices and six counts of sexual abuse.  He faces trial on similar charges in Oldham County in June, plus dozens of civil suits.  Sentencing is scheduled for May 27.  Miller
