Rep. Anthony Weiner unveiled a series of proposals yesterday to improve monitoring of sex offenders, including expanded access for parents to databases of perverts’ addresses.

Nassau County Legis. Craig Johnson on Friday called for state lawmakers to pass a bill cracking down of sex offenders. Johnson appeared on the steps of the Nassau County Courthouse with the Senate’s deputy minority leader and said Assembly and Senate leaders should reconcile competing civil confinement bills that have languished in Albany for several years. Both bills passed unanimously last month. The bills differ on how to treat sex offenders after their release from prison.

A report by Rep. Anthony Weiner (D-Brooklyn), show that nearly a third of the city’s most dangerous sex offenders live within just two blocks of an elementary or middle school and authorities have no power to make them move farther away. About 670 of the city’s 2,114 worst sex offenders live within two blocks of a school. More than 85% of the city’s Level 2 and Level 3 sex offenders – the worst of the worst – live within a quarter-mile of a school.

While communities across Long Island have been moving to sharply restrict where convicted sexual predators can live, the Village of Hempstead has taken a different approach: more intensive monitoring. The village Board of Trustees approved a policy Tuesday night that will create an intelligence network fed by constant reports from patrol officers who will be required to keep tabs on offenders living in their patrol areas.

A monthly publication called the Long Island Fugitive Finder was formally launched on Monday, January 8. The magazine, published by D & S Advertising of Coram, will be woking with the Suffolk County Crime Stoppers to profile those on the run for a variety of crimes ranging from murder to failure to appear. The Village of Mineola has been added to the growing list of Long Island municipalities restricting where registered sex offenders can live. The five-member village board voted 5-0 in favor of the bill last night following a hearing in which about two dozen residents came out to support the measure and even called for more restrictions.
