David Westerfield, a 50 year old design engineer, charged with murder and kidnapping in the disappearance of 7 year old Danielle van Dam, who disappeared from her San Diego home in February was convicted August 21, 2002 and now has been sentenced to death. Westerfield was also convicted of possessing child pornography by a jury that deliberated for nearly 10 days.

Jose Torres, a 29-year-old registered sex offender, was convicted Monday of the 1998 murder of11 year old Angelica Padilla who was killed while delivering newspapers. Torres, who was on parole,lived in the same apartment complex as the girl, Angelica Padilla. On August 13 Angelica failed toreturn home from her afternoon newspaper route. Jose Saldana Mejia, a 19 year old Holtsville man, was sentenced yesterday to six months in the Suffolk County jail for taking a 13-year-old neighbor to Oklahoma in November.  He picked up the girl in his car after she left for school one morning in November and drove her to Enid, Oklahoma where he had relatives.  Mejia was arrested three days after she was reported missing.  He was charged with first-degree kidnapping but under a deal with prosecutors pleaded guilty last month to unlawful imprisonment.  A statutory rape charge is
