Several hundred people protested the use of a trailer as temporary shelter for nearly 20 sexoffenders on the grounds of the Suffolk County Jail at a Riverhead meeting Thursday.  State,county and local officials met to suggest ways to get rid of the trailer, none of which appeared toprovide a quick enough fix for residents up in arms at its presence.  All of the men housedare convicted level 2 or 3 sex offenders, which means they must register for life and are deemed atthe highest, or second highest risk

Salvatore Zimmardi, a 60 year old who has served 3 years in prison for molesting a preteengirl, was charged Friday with illegally selling two handguns to an FBI informant for $100.  itis illegal for a felon to possess or sell firearms.  Zimmardi was also taped asking theinformant to find a hit man who could somebody for $10,000.  The intended victim was theperson whose police report led to the arrest on molestation charges, Zimmardi’s former girlfriend,the girl’s mother.  He pleaded not guilty to the gun charges and his public

William Baker, 65, of Blasdell and Lackawanna, New York, who was convicted of Possession ofChild Pornography on October 3, 2008, was sentenced to 121 months in prison.  Baker waspreviously convicted of two counts of Sodomy in the Second Degree in 1988 in Erie County forconduct relating to sexual conduct with a minor.  He had been a boy scout leader forapproximately 30 years until his conviction in 1988.  Baker has admitted to molesting 8 to 48children.

Up to 18 homeless registered sex offenders have been living in a trailer on the grounds of theSuffolk County Jail in Riverhead for more than a year.  Residents complain the trailer iswithin walking distance, less than a mile, of schools, parks and the Riverhead Library.  Themen living in the trailer are there because the county must legally accept and provide housing forhomeless sex offenders released from prison.  The offenders, generally medium and high risk,have served their prison sentences and are there voluntarily, but the trailer is not a securefacility.

Martin Fishkind, a 44 year old Centerport man, was charged with lewd conduct after he exposedhimself to two groups of 12 year old girls in Seaford.  He was arrested at his 101 FortSalonga Road home Monday after a witness saw his license plate number during one of theincidents.  He was to be arraigned on two counts each of public lewdness and endangering thewelfare of a child.
