William Salcedo, a 50 year old third grade teacher, is charged with molesting young boys in hisclassroom. Queens elementary-school teachers are lining up behind their colleague. Teachers at PS199 in Sunnyside are all incredulous at allegations that Salcedo fondled two boys, aged 8 and 9,and are volunteering to testify in his trial, according to his lawyer Merrill Rubin. Salcedopleaded not guilty at his arraignment yesterday to two counts each of coercive sexual contact andendangering the welfare of a child, charges that carry a 14 year maximum sentence.

AFTER TIME SERVED, MORE TIME (Bill: Hospitalize sex offenders)

Saying that women and children need protection from sexual predators inclined to strike again once they are released from prison, Assemblyman Steven Labriola, a Massapequa Park Republican, is calling for passage of a civil confinement law that would keep high-risk offenders locked up even after serving their sentences.  The bill would keep sex offenders who are most likely to re-offend and who have great difficulty controlling their behavior confined in mental institutions until they are deemed rehabilitated.  Labriola said the bill would affect a small portion of the offenders in

Police are offering a $2,000 reward for information leading to the arrest of a man who raped a 14 year old girl in Bushwick.  The attack occurred Tuesday around 3:30 p.m. on Bushwick Ave and Schole St.  The man, brandishing a metal object, approached the teen and forced her into his car.  He drove to Stagg St and Bushwick Ave and raped the girl in the car before she managed to flee.  He is described as a black or Hispanic man, in his 30s, 6 foot 3, about 250 pounds.

CHILD ADVOCATE EXPOSED AS PERV

Francisco Santiago, a 37 year old New Jersey man who became an advocate for child-abuse victims, has been convicted of exposing himself to two young girls at a family barbecue.  He was found guilty this week by a Westchester County Court jury of attempted sexual abuse and child endangerment.  He is free on $20,000 bail until sentencing on May 14.  He could receive up to four years in prison but State Supreme Court Justice Joseph West said he might choose a sentence of probation without prison time.

SCHOOL PERV ALARM (Sex-crime busts skyrocket by 30 percent)

The number of school employees arrested for sex crimes jumped 30 percent last year, even asrnoverall arrests were dropping. According to new statistics obtained by The Post, 1,340 schoolrnworkers — 344 teachers, 198 janitors, 149 teaching assistants, 114 school aides, 43 bus driversrnand even 25 school safety staffers — were arrested for a range of crimes in 2001. That’s down 8rnpercent from the 1,450 arrests in 2001. Arrests for sexual abuse jumped from 30 in 2001 to 39 lastrnyear, an increase of 30 percent.
