New York is implementing an Amber alert system to help find abducted kids, Governor Pataki said yesterday.  He said, When a child is abducted, the critical element is to act and react as quickly as possible.  We must be the eyes and ears to get the children back.  Amber alerts use 519 highway message signs, toll booth clerks and all 400 state radio and television broadcasters to spread info about snatched kids as fast as possible.  Case details will also be transmitted through the highway advisory radio system and the

Fourteen-year-old Elizabeth Smart was reportedly taken from her home at gunpoint on June 5th between 1 and 2 a.m. Police said that an intruder forced open a window at Elizabeth’s home and went into the bedroom where the teenager and her 9 year old sister slept. Police said the gunman warned the younger girl her sister would be harmed if she told anyone, and she waited two hours before alerting her parents. Kenneth James Nugent, a 46 year old Manorville soccer coach, was arrested after he met with undercover police at an Essington, Pennsylvania hotel, expecting to have sex with a 13 year old girl.  Agents with the Delaware County Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force arrested Nugent on August 20.  He was charged with criminal attempt relating to statutory sexual assault, criminal solicitation related to involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, criminal solicitation relating to statutory sexual assault, criminal attempt relating to involuntary deviant sexual intercourse, criminal attempt to corrupt a minor and

JD Babauta, a 17 year old ‘Ewa boy, was charged with multiple sexual assault offenses stemming from an alleged attack on two teenage girls, 13 and 14, at a Seaview subdivision on February 20.  He was charged with two counts of first degree sexual assault and one count of second degree sex assault.  Arcel Tuabalado, 31, was also charged in the case.  He is charged with first degree sexual assault and is at the O’ahu Community Correctional Center awaiting trial.  Third degree sex assault charges are pending against a third

Taking advantage of a provision in Michigan’s statute of limitations, authorities charged four Roman Catholic priests who once worked in the Detroit Archdiocese with sex abuse in cases dating back decades.  None of the priests are still active, and all live in other states, which is the main reason prosecutors were able to charge them Tuesday.  The charged priests are:

Robert Burkholder, 82, who lives on the island of Oahu, Hawaii;

Jason E. Sigler, 64, of New Mexico;

Harry Benjamin, 60, of Vienna, Virginia; and

Edward Olszewski, 67,

Samuel Russo, a 64 year old former Collier County school bus driver, pleaded no contest to giving a pornographic movie to a 10 year old girl on his bus and trying to persuade her and a friend to engage in sexual activity.  He entered the plea Monday without an agreement with the prosecutor about what the sentence will be.  He faces a maximum of five years in prison on each of the two felonies and a minimum of about a year in county jail.  Russo resigned from his job December
