Cardinal Edward Egan adopted a tough stand against clerical abuse yesterday, asserting that no priest guilty of a single act of sexual abuse against a child will ever return to ministry in the Archdiocese of New York.

The woman whose letter about her affair with Bishop James McCarthy led to his resignation has said she was 16 years old when the liaison began, contradicting McCarthy.  The woman, who is now in her 40s, has said she started her affair with McCarthy when he was a priest in the New York Archdiocese and that it continued over 20 years.  McCarthy, 59, resigned this week as a bishop and pastor of a Westchester parish after archdiocese officials confronted him about the lette the woman sent to Edward Cardinal Egan

The victims of clerical abuse took center stage yesterday as the nation’s bishops began to wrestle with the church’s deepening crisis.  They want the removal of bishops who protected errant priests, as well as of the priests themselves.

Seventeen years ago, a team of two priests and an attorney probed the first public cases of priest pedophiles in America and delivered a prophetic message to the nation’s Roman Catholic prelates.  The team wrote in a 92 page report presented to the bishops that clergy sex abuse of children is the single most serious and far-reaching problem facing our church today.  But the bishops took no action.

A bill requiring agencies doing business with the county to report suspicions of child sexual abuse to Child Protective Services, despite objections from Parents for Megan’s Law advocates who called the legislation toothless, was passed by Suffolk lawmakers yesterday.  The version passed orders managers at contracting agencies to report suspected abuse by any of their employees to the New York State Child Protective Services Child Abuse Registry or face escalating penalties and mandated child sex abuse prevention education.  Legis.
