Bishop Anthony J. O’Connell of the Diocese of Palm Beach who sexually abused a teenage student at a Missouri seminary more than 25 years ago, resigned yesterday, becoming the highest-ranking clergyman brought down in the scandal touched off in Boston. The bishop admitted to allegations made by former student Christopher Dixon, now 40. Dixon said the two touched inappropriately in bed after he sought out O’Connell for counseling in the late 1970s. O’Connell, 63, was rector of St. Thomas Aquinas Seminary in Hannibal, Mo., at the time.

Gerald DeWayne Lewis, a 34 year old man already suspected in three sexual assaults, faces charges of molesting a 16 year old girl who deputies accidentally locked in his jail cell. Lewis was inside a holding cell at Arapahoe County Jail last week hiding under a bed when the girl was taken there to await a court appearance. The deputies escorting her thought the cell was empty. The girl was in the cell for about 40 minutes. He allegedly fondled the girl over her clothing and she told her attorney
Joseph Castrovinci, a 14 year old boy accused of sexually assaulting two minors, including a 7 year old child, was ordered by Judge Charles Gill back to school despite being charged with the multiple counts of sexual assault. Gill had earlier said he considered Castrovinci to be a danger to himself and others but at a bail hearing he said the best place for him would be with his parents and at New Milford High School, not jail. Ted Smith, a 32 year old Newington man with a history of child molesting, is facing 11 years inprison for molesting a 7 year old girl. Smith, who lived at the Carrier Motor Lodge on the BerlinTurnpike in Newington, was baby-sitting the girl on July 29. The girl parents also lived in themotel, according to prosecutors. Smith has now been convicted of five sex crimes against childrendating back to 1990. He was registered in California as a sexual offender before moving toConnecticut.

Jose Torres, a 29-year-old registered sex offender, was convicted Monday of the 1998 murder of11 year old Angelica Padilla who was killed while delivering newspapers. Torres, who was on parole,lived in the same apartment complex as the girl, Angelica Padilla. On August 13 Angelica failed toreturn home from her afternoon newspaper route.
