EGAN’S OLD DIOCESE SETTLES CHILD-MOLEST SUITS

The Diocese of Bridgeport, which admitted sex abused by six priests, agreed to settle civil cases by paying undisclosed sums to 26 people who said they were molested.  Edward Cardinal Egan was supposed to take the witness stand for a public grilling about priests who molested children in his former Connecticut diocese but has been spared.  One of the longstanding suits against the diocese named Egan as a defendant.  The late Bishop Walter Curtis was head of the diocese between 1961 and 1988, when most of the abuse occurred.

80 YEAR SENTENCE IN ABUSE CASE

Gary Gillard, a 38-year-old Huntington man, was convicted of four counts of first-degree sodomy,first-degree sexual abuse, endangering the welfare of a child and third degree assault. He wassentenced to 80 years in state prison with no chance of parole. He sexually abused and sodomizedthe 9-year-old daughter of an acquaintance. Gillard committed the crimes on numerous occasionsbetween May and October 1999. His criminal record dates to 1980 and includes convictions forreckless endangerment, assault and petty larceny. FLASHER ARRESTED

Michael G. Callahan, a 48 year old Alexandria man, was arrested in connection with an incident of indecent exposure on the Chief Ladiga Trail, following a highly publicized search.  Callahan was said to have exposed himself on February 21 to a pair of women walking along the northern end of the trail.  Witnesses chased the suspect, who was wearing a nylon stocking over his head, through the woods following the incident and watched as he fled the scene in a red Toyota truck.  Witnesses were able to take down the

PERVERTS CAUGHT IN THE ‘NET

Eric Wahl, a 42-year-old millionaire Manhattan advertising executive, thought he made a date for sex with a 13 year old girl he met on the Internet but his alleged date turned out to be a girlish-looking undercover female detective.  He told the girl to wear her school clothes for their rendezvous.  When they met in Greenwich Village last October and he took her to a nearby hotel room, paying in cash under an alias, he ended up getting handcuffed, fingerprinted and arrested on charges of disseminating indecent material to minors,

COPS ARREST RAPIST ON THE LAM IN B’KLYN

Maxwell Bogle, 38, was indicted in the 1996 kidnap and rape of a 15 year old girl, in which he and co-defendant, Eric Ellis, held her prisoner for nine hours, sexually assaulted, pistol-whipped and threatened to kill her in front of two other children, ages 14 and 15.  Bogle jumped bail before his trial and is suspected of committing a fatal shooting and four gunpoint home invasions while on the lam.  He was captured yesterday at his Brooklyn hideout.  He surrendered without resistance.

TWICE-SOLD TWINS’ CALIF. ‘DAD’ IS JAILED IN KID-MOLEST CASE

Richard Allen, the 49-year-old would-be dad in the sensational tug-of-war case over twin babies adopted on the Internet is charged with molesting two baby-sitters.  The California man spent yesterday in a Rancho Cucamonga jail cell, in lieu of $100,000 bail on charges of lewd and lascivious acts on the 13 and 14-year-old sisters.  Investigators will try to determine if Allen harmed the twin babies.  The Allen’s paid $6,000 and adopted the babies over the Internet last fall and when they allowed the birth mother, Tranda Wecker, to visit two months
