Suffolk County’s much-criticized sex offender housing plan for the Town of Babylon wassquashed Tuesday, but residents say the alternative plan may create an even bigger problem. The county planned on setting up a shelter for homeless sex offenders in industrial areas in EastFarmingdale and other spots.  Instead, the county will use a voucher system and give homelesssex offenders $90 a day to find housing they will be responsible for keeping their addressescurrent.  Critics of the new plans say it doesn’t put enough restrictions on where the sexoffenders live or provide

A hearing is scheduled in Lincoln County District Court on January 14 that couldtest the patience of a federal judge who has already allowed small parts of the new sex offenderregistry act to be argued on merits of constitutionality.  Previous cases were filed in otherparts of the state to contest the January 1 deadline that implemented LB 97 and LB 285, acomprehensive set of new statues that makes public knowledge the names of all sex offenders, asopposed to just high-risk offenders, and changes how sex offenders are monitored postconviction.

Suffolk’s Department of Social Services says it’s considering housing homeless sex offendersat a location in Farmingdale, much to the opposition of many in the community.  One of thesites being considered is an industrial area on Gaza Boulevard.  However, the Adventurelandtheme park, an indoor fun center and two movie theaters are all within a mile.
