Nick Sorrentino, a 61 year old convicted sex offender, was arrested for fatally bludgeoning a former gay lover in a Murray Hill apartment.  The July 10 arrested came after cops matched saliva left on a beverage can to Sorrentino’s DNA profile.  He is being held without bail on a murder charge.  He is accused of repeatedly smashing Jose Raul Prieto, 70, in the head with a fire extinguisher and then strangling him in his apartment on East 35th Street.  According to the New Jersey State Police sex offender Web site,

Dozens of convicted sex offenders who were kept locked up past their prison terms under former Governor George Pataki because they were deemed still dangerous have been quietly released in recent months.  According to the state Division of Criminal Justice Services, of the approximately 125 sex offenders civilly confined under Pataki, 44 – more than one-third – have been released after being given new court-ordered hearings before state mental-health officials.

CAGING THE BEASTS

The state is trying to civilly confine 34 more convicted sex offenders who are due for release.

The Texas Council on Sex Offender Treatment approved on Friday a system of additional tests to improve the classification of offenders who could be released from prison.  The psychological evaluations will help determine the risk an offender is to the community.  The state currently uses a risk test that looks at attributes such as age, gender, marital status and previous offenses.  Critics said the old test tends to penalize too sharply the young, low-level offenders while overlooking more dangerous offenders.

New York State’s highest court yesterday rejected convicted sex offender Todd North’s attempt to avoid being placed on a public state registry.  The Court of Appeals decision after North, of Jamestown, argued that he committed his crime before the applicable state law was adopted and that the federal charge of which he was convicted didn’t equal the state charge upon which mandatory registration is based.  He argued that those loopholes exempted him from registering under the state’s version of Megan’s Law.  North pleaded guilty in 2004 to possession of child
