In 1987, 15 year old Tawana Brawley, was found four days after disappearing from her home.  She was found in a garbage bag with dog feces smeared on her body and racial epithets scrawled on her.  She claimed a gang of white law enforcement officers had abducted and raped her.  Eventually, a grand jury pronounced her story a hoax, exonerating former prosecutor Steven Pagones.  Pagones said that his victory over the Rev. Al Sharpton and two other advisors to Brawley in his racially charged, $395 million lawsuit was bittersweet.  Pagones

Kent Franks, a 39 year old Locust Valley Elementary School gym teacher, was arrested and accused of repeatedly sexually abusing seven young girls from September 1999 to November 2001. Franks has taught kindergartners through second-graders at the Ann MacArthur School on Reyfield Road for the past seven years. He surrendered to special victims detective in Bellmore after a 2 1/2 month investigation. He is accused of setting up games during which he would either trick the girls into touching him inappropriately, or casually place their hands on his private areas.

Alan Robert Johnson, a 24 year old North Fort Myers man, is accused of using his mother’s e-mail to pose as a teenage girl and send pornographic images over the Internet.  He pleaded not guilty to federal charges of possession of child pornography.  FBI agents raided the home of Paul Bardotz in West Seneca, New York and seized Bardotz’s computer.  Investigators found several pornographic images of young girls and an infant on his computer that were sent to him.  The e-mail address was traced to Johnson’s mother.  Bardotz told FBI

Lawrence Lovell, a defrocked priest, was awaiting trial on charges of molesting four altar boysbetween 1980 and 1984, when at 2:26 a.m. Friday, he left the Los Angeles County jail after lessthan a week behind bars. At least a dozen teenagers assigned to work with police departments as part of the Boy Scouts’ Law Enforcement Explorers program have allegedly been sexually abused by officers during the past year.  At least 25 in the past five years, according to criminologists’ research being released today.

Among recent cases:

–Officer Keith Maynard, 31, was charged with two counts of statutory rape and two counts of aggravated child molestation.  He is accused of having sex with a 15 year old girl in the program.  The East Ridge, Tennessee police department

Malcolm Bowman, a 19 year old man, has been charged with raping and sodomizing a 13 year old girl in his Grymes Hill apartment.  He allegedly had sex with her in his Steuben Street home on June 19.  The next morning, he allegedly had sex with her again.
