Alfonzo Forney, a 28 year old volunteer coach at St. John Recreation Center, which plays host to hundreds of children in a number of after school programs, including a basketball program, is a registered Level 3 sex offender. On the shaded streets of Coram and Gordon Heights, 39 convicted sex offenders live within a half-square-mile area. Fifteen reside on one block alone, and 11 properties house multiple offenders. Antonio Ibarra-Rios, a 21 year old Jackson Heights man, was busted for sexually attacking a 12 year old girl in the backroom of the Flushing deli in which he worked.  He assaulted the girl in the Metropolitan Avenue store near Arnold Avenue at 4 p.m. on September 15.  He kissed, fondled and sodomized the girl.  He is charged with a criminal sex act and with endangering the welfare of a child.

Mastic residents claim they have seen dramatic changes in their neighborhood and said they have had enough.  The breaking point came when residents discovered that, at a home at 115 Eleanor Avenue, four registered, level three offenders were living under the same roof.  On August 28, in response to the citizen’s complaints, Suffolk County Legislator Kate Browning (WF-Shirley) held a press conference to announce a proposal that would prevent Suffolk County’s Department of Social Services, or any contract agencies that work in conjunction with the department, from placing more than
