SENATE BANS COMPUTER CHILD PORN

A bill calling for a prison term of up to 12 years and a fine of up to $10,000 for inducing or permitting a child to be engaged in pornography was voted on by Senators 26-4.  The bill toughens the state’s anti-child porn law, cracking down on computer-generated child pornography.  According to the Associated Press, it also makes it illegal to manufacture, receive, reproduce or possess child pornography.  Language that outlaws creating images of children that appear to be engaging in sexual conduct has also been reinserted by Senators.

NORFOLK MAN, CONVICTED IN CHILD-PORN CASE, KILLS SELF

MAN SENTENCED TO 12 YEARS FOR SOLICITING OVER INTERNET

Douglas I. Scott, 34, thought he was communicating with a 12 year old boy online, instead he was actually communicating with a police officer.  He was arranging a sexual encounter with the boy.  Scott has been sentenced to 12 years in prison Tuesday, two more years than prosecutors had sought.  According to the Chicago Tribune, Scott was a former security monitor and assistant athletic trainer at Elk Grove High School when he was arrested in 1997 for possessing child pornography that he downloaded from the Internet.  He lost his job

PARENTS KEY TO SAFER INTERNET

Parents must go beyond the stranger-danger warnings to protect children online.  Lt. FORMER GOVERNOR’S AIDE ARRESTED ON SEX CHARGE

Tom Rice, 58, is accused of arranging a sexual encounter over the Internet with an undercover investigator posing as a 13 year old boy.  The former governor’s aide was released on $10,000 bond after being charged with attempting to have sex with the boy. He has been ordered to stay off the Internet and avoid unsupervised contact with anyone under age 18.  If he is convicted he could face a maximum sentence of 15 years in prison.
