States that accepted Katrina evacuees are being urged to locate about 2,000 registered sexoffenders who fled the Gulf region during the hurricane and many have vanished from legallyrequired tracking. The Administration for Children and Families estimated that about 30 states areaffected.

Connecticut’s registry of people convicted of sex crimes is going national, as the state becomes the 48th to join the National Sex Offender database.  The identities of the 4,136 registered sex offenders living in Connecticut will be added to those already on the national Web site, www.nsopr.gov.

Shannon Colwell, a 27 year old Massapequa man who failed to register as a sex offender, was arrested after a surprise visit by his probation officer to his home turned up child porn on his computer.  Colwell, of 38 N. Baldwin Place, was arrested Thursday and charged with possession of sexual performance by a child.  His bail was set at $20,000 bond or $10,000 cash and he is being held at the Nassau County jail in East Meadow.  He had been on probation after he was charged in March for

An alarming new study by Senator Jeffrey Klein (D-Bronx) has found that more than 100 convicted sex predators, many of them considered high risk, have moved to New York City since August.  Klein, citing new data from the Department of Criminal Justice Services, says that as of November 18, there were 5,346 convicted sex offenders in the city, a 2 percent increase from the 5,225 registered offenders on August 18.
