David Westerfield, a 50 year old design engineer, charged with murder and kidnapping in the disappearance of 7 year old Danielle van Dam, who disappeared from her San Diego home in February was convicted August 21, 2002 and now has been sentenced to death. Westerfield was also convicted of possessing child pornography by a jury that deliberated for nearly 10 days.

Brian Nichols, a 16 year old boy, admitted yesterday to sexually abusing seven girls at Greece Arcadia High School in Rochester. He faced 82 misdemeanor counts of third degree sexual abuse and one count of second degree harassment. He pleaded guilty to three counts of sexual abuse. He faces six months in jail when he is sentenced January 23.

David Quinn, a 37 year old Rockville Centre man, tried to hire a hit man to sexually mutilate his girlfriend’s former husband, who is in jail on charges that he raped his own daughter. He arranged to pay $1,000 to have his girlfriend’s former husband stabbed in the groin. The hit man he hired was actually an undercover investigator. Roman Catholic dioceses in Southern California have won a reprieve in more than 100 potential lawsuits by alleged victims of priestly sexual abuse. Lawyers for purported victims in Los Angeles and Orange counties agreed to try to mediate claims instead of taking them immediately to court.

Despite insisting a year earlier that Rev. Ronald Paquin should leave the priesthood, Long Island Catholic Bishop William Murphy once recommended that the Boston area priest accused of molesting boys return to his ministry. Paquin, 59, was charged in May with raping a child. He began molesting the then 11 year old boy in 1989. He was removed from the ministry in 2000. Paquin was suspended from priestly duties for much of the 1990s, and the Boston Archdiocese paid more than $500,000 to settle six sex suits.

Jamie Greenberg, a 30 year old Seaford man, was arrested yesterday for passing himself off as a police officer to take advantage of an underage female. Greenberg, of 2569 South Seamans Neck Road, approached a parked car in which an unidentified young couple was kissing. He knocked on the window, identified himself as a police officer and threatened an arrest.
