Michael Caraballo, a 20 year old blind man, was ordered by a judge yesterday to be held in jail until he can post $15,000 bail for the alleged statutory rape of a 13 year old New Jersey girl. Fifteen men who said they were abused by clergy who taught at two Jesuit-run high schools in NewEngland have settled their claims. The dollar amounts of the settlements were not disclosed butthey were called fair and equitable. The Boston Globe reported yesterday the settlements totaled$5.8 million and ranged from $75,000 to more than $1 million. Fitz Ellis, a 47 year old school bus driver, has been charged with sexually assaulting a 15 year old girl when she was the only passenger on the bus last month. Ellis, of Hartford, Connecticut, was arraigned yesterday on charges of first degree sexual assault, first degree aggravated sexual assault and first degree kidnapping. He is being held on a $1 million bond. According to police, he told the girl he would shoot her to death if she screamed, but she never saw a gun.

John DePaolo, a 32 year old Brooklyn high school teacher, was charged with sexually abusing a 15 year old girl. DePaolo is a substitute teacher at New Utrecht High School. He is charged with rape in the third degree, sodomy in the third degree, sexual misconduct and endangering the welfare of a child. He pleaded not guilty and was released on his own recognizance.

Robert Sigler, Jr., the 54 year old superintendent of Middletown city schools, has been charged with sexually abusing a 14 year old male high school student. He was arrested late Wednesday, within 12 hours after cops first learned of the abuse that allegedly occurred in November 2001 at the residence of Sigler. California has lost track of more than 33,000 convicted sex offenders, despite a law requiring rapists and child molesters to register each year for inclusion in the Megan’s Law database.
