Ralph DeMayo, a 28 year old convicted sex offender from Glen Cove, was arrested and chargedWednesday with possessing child pornography, the same crimes that landed him in jail in 2008. DeMayo, of 219 Lawrence Lane, is charged with three counts of promoting a sexual performance by achild in that occurred on August 31.  He is a Level 1 sex offender, which is designated in NewYork State for those considered a low risk for repeating the offense.  DeMayo was arrested andcharged with the same two crimes in 2008 and pleaded

Parents for Megan’s Law is slated to begin monitoring the online activities of NassauCounty’s 550 registered sex offenders early next year, including tracking posts on Facebook andTwitter, and forwarding leads to police.  Acting Nassau Police Commissioner Thomas Krumptersaid the Stony Brook-based nonprofit, which focuses on preventing sex abuse crimes and supportingvictims, also would create a smartphone app to allow the public to report possible sex offenderviolations.  Laura Ahearn, executive director of Parents for Megan’s Law, said the expandedprogram would boost public safety by helping to maintain an accurate and up-to-date sex offenderregistry.  Ahearn said her group also will create a telephone hotline for people withquestions about Megan’s Law and for victims to report allegations; refer sexual abuse victims tolocal counseling program; and create a prevention-based education program in schools and policeprecincts.  The police department and the county’s Department of Probation will continue tomake all visits and phone contacts with convicted offenders.

There is a small community in Florida known as Miracle Village, where more than 100registered sex offenders have settled since 2009.  Surrounded by sugar cane fields, thecommunity has become a rare refuge for them as they try to rebuild their lives in one of the onlycommunities that will have them.  Stringent residency requirements make it almost impossiblefor them to live anywhere else.

Dustin Shrauger, a 21 year old convicted sex offender from the Binghamton area, was foundstaying with friends in their dorm room at a western New York community college.  Tioga CountySheriff’s Office issued an arrest warrant Wednesday morning for Shrauger after he broke hisconditions of parole by leaving the county.  He is required to wear a GPS device to trackhim.  Shrauger was convicted in 2011 of raping a 6 year old child and is registered as a Level2 sex offender in New York State.  He is back in jail in

Peter Baumeister, a 37 year old registered sex offender, living with his brother inCaledonia, was discovered living near two schools, in violation of a local ordinance. Baumeister told police he called state authorities to alert them he was moving to Caledonia, butthe state doesn’t check placement against local ordinances.  Baumeister was convicted ofaggravated sex assault in Texas several years ago, he served prison time bus in not under anysupervision.
